Berwick had the stage to themselves in hosting the first meeting of the season. Their opposition were Sheffield not in a pre-season challenge match which is the norm for most teams’ first matches but in a Premier Trophy match.

Berwick could not have got off to a better start. They won the opening four heats 5-1 to take a 20-4 lead and Sheffield at that stage looked to be in for a massacre. However a Sean Wilson win in heat 5 steadied the boat and with heats 6 and 7 also shared Sheffield trailed 29-13 after heat 7.

A 2-4 to Sheffield in a rerun heat 8 after Joachim Kugelmann was injured and retired from the meeting was followed by a TR by Andre Compton in heat 9 which resulted in a 1-8 to Sheffield reducing the Bandits lead to 7 points at 32-25. However the Sheffield come back shuddered to a halt in heat 10 thanks to a Rymel, Makowsky 5-1 stretching the Berwick lead to 37-26.

A TR for Sean Wilson in heat 11 could only earn a share of the points as he finished second to Chris Schramm who was in sensational form. With Piotr Dym taking third place Sheffield gained no heat advantage. However in heat 12 Schramm was beaten by Sheffield reserve Paul Cooper who is, of course, no stranger to Shielfield. With Berwick skipper Simon Cartwright picking up the third place point the lead remained at 11 points at 44-33.

Heat 13 was easily won by Andre Compton but Piotr Dym and Chris Schramm kept Sean Wilson at the back to virtually guarantee a Berwick win. Heats 14 and 15 were both won by Michal Makowsky and resulted in 4-2s to Berwick to stretch the winning margin to 15 points at 55-40.
