Berwick , still without Scott Smith or any replacement, used R/R at number 2. Otherwise they were at full strength. Stoke had Theo Pijper at number 5 as their guest for Jan Staechmann. This was not the walkover that Berwick might have hoped for. Stoke were never far enough behind to use any tactical options and Berwick did not clinch the match until heat 14. Things did not look good for Stoke when Alan Mogridge fell in heat 1 and was excluded. Stoke, none too impressed with the track, asked for a grading before the match continued and there was a delay while this took place. In the rerun of the opening heat Adrian Rymel gated but Adam Allott took second place for a 4-2 to the Bandits. The expected 5-1 for the Berwick reserves duly materialised in heat 2 for a six point lead but there was a shock in store for the Bandits in heat 3. Paul Clews and Robbie Kessler made fast starts and had no problem taking a 1-5. Then in heat 4 Theo Pijper beat Michal Makovsky with Jack Hargreaves taking advantage of a Wilkinson engine failure for third place and a 2-4 which levelled the match at 12-12. Alan Mogridge won heat 5 to keep the scores tied but Adrian Rymel and Chris Schramm scored a 5-1 in heat 6 from Theo Pijper to put the Bandits four points in front again. Robbie Kessler won heat 7 and with Paul Clews taking third place behind Michal Makovsky Stoke pulled two points back with a 2-4. However another Berwick 5-1 in heat 8 from Pietraszko and Wilkinson increased their lead to six points at 27-21. Back came Stoke again in heat 9. Theo Pijper won again and with Barrie Evans third behind Pietraszko the heat resulted in a 2-4 to the Potters to reduce the gap to four points. Rymel and Wilkinson were split by Paul Clews for a Berwick 4-2 to increase the lead to six points again and the next three heats were shared all of them won by the visitors with Alan Mogridge, Paul Clews and Theo Pijper taking the race wins. The score was now 42-36 but Stoke’s gallant effort was doomed to failure when Berwick won heat 14 by 4-2 before they wrapped the match up with their fourth 5-1 in the last heat for a 12 point victory.
