Hull used R/R for Emiliano Sanchez and had Benji Compton at reserve for their injured reserve Joel Parsons at number 7. Berwick used R/R for the injured Scott Smith at number 2 but otherwise were at full strength.

Berwick knew that a win in this match would gain them some ground on Rye House in the race for the Premier League crown because the Rockets lost their league match heavily at Craven Park earlier in the season. It looked as though Berwick’s season-long strength in the reserve berths would prove crucial and so it proved with the Vikings outscored in this department by 5-15.

Hull got off to a winning start by taking a 4-2 in the opening heat when Paul Thorp beat Adrian Rymel with Emil Kramer third but the Berwick reserves squared things with a 2-4 in heat 2. Hull were back in front in heat 3 though with a 4-2 from Kramer and Craig Branney then heat 4 was shared. Garry Stead touched the tapes and had to go from 15 metres back but, although the race was won by Michal Makovsky, Cal Wilkinson fell and was excluded from the rerun. The heat 4 score was 13-11.

Emil Kramer and Craig Branney doubled the Vikings lead with a 4-2 in heat 5 then Paul Thorp won heat 6 to keep it that way. Heat 7 was a bad one for Hull. Garry Stead suffered an engine failure at the start and the Bandits took full advantage by taking a 1-5 from Adam Pietraszko and Tom P Madsen to level the scores. Paul Thorp won again in heat 8 so the score after eight races was 24-24.

In heat 9 Berwick took the lead for the first time when Makovsky beat Branney with Schramm third and Emil Kramer finishing at the back. It was a lead they were never to surrender. In heat 10 Paul Thorp produced his fourth race win but with no support the race was shared. Berwick increased their lead in heat 11 with another 2-4 this time from Wilkinson who beat Garry Stead and Rymel and a Craig Branney win in heat 12 produced a shared heat so the score after twelve races was 34-38.

Things didn’t look so good for Berwick when Michal Makovsky touched the tapes in heat 13 and was replaced by Carl Wilkinson but the Berwick reserve’s second place behind Garry Stead and ahead of Paul Thorp gained them a valuable two points in a 4-2 to Hull which ensured they stayed ahead albeit by only two points. Then came the late, late Pietraszko show. The Berwick number 4 won the two remaining heats unsupported and the Bandits had taken all three points.
