League Champions Hull built up a 14 point advantage for the second leg of the Yorkshire Cup in beating Sheffield by 53-39 in this local derby match. Both teams were at full strength.

Hull kicked off with a 5-1 from Thorp and Sanchez against the two Wilsons and a further 4-2 and 5-1 in heats 3 and 4 suggested it was going to be a long night for Sheffield particularly since their big two of Sean Wilson and Andre Compton (who was beaten by Craig Branney in heat 4) had both conceded 5-1s in their opening rides. However Sean and Ben Wilson halved heat 5 but another two 4-2s in heats 6 and 8 saw Hull move into a 31-17 lead.

Sheffield dug in after that and a 3-5 in heat 9 thanks to a second place from Andre Compton on a TR brought Sheffield back to within 12 points of the Hull total but the Tigers saw fit not use another TR nomination at that point. There then followed three 3-3s before Sheffield struck again with a 1-5 in heat 13 from their big two of Sean Wilson and Andre Compton ahead of Gary Stead and Paul Thorp. Had they nominated either rider for a TR this could have been a 1-8 instead of a 1-5. However since the 1-5 reduced the deficit to 8 points they had lost the opportunity and the unbeaten Emil Kramer won both heats 14 and 15 to take a 4-2 and 5-1 to stretch the Hull lead to 14 points again at 53-39. The return leg should be interesting though.
