This match wasn’t quite as close as the 3 point win for Newport would suggest. A last heat 1-5 for Reading put a better gloss on it although there wasn’t all that much between the teams during the match. Both teams were at full strength.

Two 5-1s for Newport in heats 2 and 3 saw them into an early 8 point lead after Danny Bird had won the opening race for a share of the points. The next three heats were all shared before Newport stretched their lead even further with a 4-2 in heat 7 when Andrew Appleton could only split the home pairing of Watson and Atkin. Reading were now 10 points behind so Chris Mills took a TR in heat 8. Although Kristian Lund won the heat, Mills took second place and with his partner, MathieuTressarieu, third Reading gained a 3-5 to take the score to 29-21.

Reading made further inroads in heat 9 when Matej Zagar beat Neil Collins with Chris Johnson third after Mads Korneliussen had fallen and been excluded. Back came Newport with a 5-1 from Coles and Lund in heat 10 over Appleton only for Reading to do likewise in heat 12 when Johnson and Westacott finished ahead of Karlis Ezergailis after Mads Korneliussen had retired. The score now stood at 40-36.

In heat 13 Craig Watson beat Danny Bird and Matej Zagar to keep Newport’s four point advantage but after both Andrew Appleton and Mathieu Treassarieu had been excluded in heat 14 Newport sealed the match with a 5-0 to go nine points ahead with just heat 15 to follow. In the last heat Craig Watson fell and was excluded. Zagar and Bird took a 1-5 to narrow the gap to 49-44.
