Both Sheffield and Rye House were at full strength for this match. How the mighty are fallen. With a 29 point lead following their home win against the Tigers last May, Rye House must have thought that the bonus point at least was in the bag. It wasn’t! By the end of heat 14 Sheffield were already a point in front on aggregate as they crushed the team widely tipped to win all the team honours this season. Sheffield were in awesome mood tonight and yet Rye House got off to a reasonable enough start with a shared heat one in which Stuart Robson and Edward Kennett kept Sean Wilson at the back in a race won by Ben Wilson. The Sheffield reserves opened up a four point lead for the Tigers with a 5-1 then heat 3 was shared as Ricky Ashworth led home Daniel King and Brent Werner. In heat 4 Kyle Legault passed Tommy Allen to join Andre Compton for another Tigers’ 5-1 and a heat four score of 16-8. In heat 5 Ricky Ashworth won again but Richard Hall failed to score again so the heat was shared. The two Wilsons took another 5-1 for Sheffield in heat 6 to increase their lead to 12 points so Daniel King took a TR in heat 7. It only resulted in damage limitation as King finished second to Andre Compton for a 4-4. Then Edward Kennett took a TR in heat 8 but blew it when he hit the fence on the second bend and finished at the back. Sheffield’s fourth 5-1 in eight heats took the score to 33-17. In desperation Rye House gave Stuart Robson a Tactical Substitute ride in heat 9 from 15 metres back in place of Steve Boxall and were rewarded when Robson came from the back to pass his partner Chris Neath and Richard Hall for second place and four points in a race won by Ricky Ashworth. Again though it was only for a shared heat 4-4 as Neath finished last. Another 5-1 from the two Wilsons in heat 10 now had Rye House looking uneasily at the bonus point situation as their aggregate lead had been whittled down to 9 points with no tactical options left. Andre Compton won heat 11 but Robson and Kennett filled the minor places for a shared heat then in heat 12 Tommy Allen finished second to Ricky Ashworth with Kyle Legault third for a 4-2 to Sheffield which took the heat 12 score to 49-27 and Rye House’s aggregate lead to 7 points. In a grandstand finish Sheffield finished off their opponents with three consecutive 5-1s to leave the Rockets licking their wounds over a 34 point defeat and 29 point turnover for the bonus point. It must be a long time since a Rye House side failed to produce a single race winner or take any heat advantage all meeting let alone concede 8 races by the maximum 5-1 score! Match Report by Merlin |
