With Workington riding at Berwick tomorrow night their home match against the Bandits was raced tonight since both are Saturday night tracks. Workington went into this match on the back of their fine display last week against Edinburgh while Berwick were brimming with confidence after gaining a draw at Glasgow last Sunday. Both teams were at full strength.

As happened last week, Workington got off to a 5-1 winning start through Little and Stonehewer ahead of Adrian Rymel. James Wright won heat 2 for a shared heat but Nieminen and Robson took a 4-2 to stretch the lead to 12-6 before Berwick hit back with a 2-4 of their own when Piotr Dym headed home Shaun Tacey with Joachim Kugelmann third to take the score to 14-10. Heat 5 was shared thanks to an Adrian Rymel win for Berwick as was heat 6 when Kevin Little fell leaving Carl Stonehewer to win the heat.

The next three heats were also shared as Berwick kept within 4 points of the Workington total with wins from Makovsky, Little and Nieminen but in heat 10 Workington took a 4-2 from maximum man Stonehewer and his partner Kevin little to open up a 6 point gap at 33-27. After that some of the life seemed to go out of the Berwick effort as they crumbled to a 4-2 in heat 11 from Wright and Tacey before James Wright came out again in heat 12 to win with his partner, Scott Robson, second for a 5-1 which took the score to 42-30. Then Carl Stonehewer and Shaun Tacey sealed things with a 5-2 as Adrian Rymel on a TR could only finish third. It was Michal Makovsky’s turn for a TR in heat 14 and he duly obliged by heading home James Wright and Kauko Nieminen for a 3-6 but Stonehewer and Nieminen wrapped things up with a Workington 4-2 in the last heat to take a 14 point lead looking for the bonus point in the return match tomorrow night.
