At Workington, Edinburgh were the visitors. With Shaun Tacey having recovered from his accident of last Saturday night both teams were at full strength. Edinburgh were hammered over the early races as the faster gating Comets ripped them apart. Kevin Little and Carl Stonehewer got things under way with a 5-1 in the opening heat and James Wright and Tony Dart took a 4-2 in heat 2 before Workington hit home another 5-1 in heat 3 as Kauko Nieminen and Scott Robson just managed to hold off the ever pressing Rusty Harrison. Ross Brady steadied the ship for Edinburgh by winning heat 4 for a shared heat to take the score to 17-7. Any hope that the Monarchs had turned the tide was quickly dispelled as they lost heats 5 and 6 to Workington 5-1s. However Edinburgh rallied as Rusty Harrison took a TR and won heat 7. Without support Edinburgh only pulled back three points with the 3-6 taking the score to 30-15. There was a real shock for the Comets in heat 8, though, as Theo Pijper and Robert Ksiezak scored a 1-5 as Kevin Little suffered an engine failure on the last bend to bring the Monarchs back into the match at 31-20. Ross Brady on a TR briefly led heat 9 before being passed by Scott Robson and Kauko Nieminen to put the Comets back in the driving seat with a 5-2. A fine win for Rusty Harrison over Carl Stonehewer and Kevin Little produced a shared heat in heat 10 then a 4-2 from James Wright and Shaun Tacey split by Daniel Nermark took the score to 43-27.Heats 12 and 13 both produced 4-2s to Workington and a 5-1 in heat 14 from Nieminen and Dart ahead of Cameron Woodward kept Workington on course for a 60 point total which duly materialised when Rusty Harrison finished second to Scott Robson with Kauko Nieminen third.
